The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has deep historical origins. President Putin released an essay in July 2021 in which he emphasised the nonfictional and civilisational ties that exist between Russians and Ukrainians.
The escalating war between Russia and Ukraine could not have been predicted in the form it has taken. When Russia recognised the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk two days ago, it was evident that Moscow would confront the situation head-on, but no one expected it to launch an all-out war on Ukraine.

THE ORIGINS OF THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT
President Putin gave a short evaluation of US unilateralism and humanitarian intervention strategy at the Munich security conference in February 2007.
In 2010, pro-Russian Yanukovych reclaimed power, and in 2013, he halted the signing of an association agreement with the EU, sparking widespread protests. He left Ukraine in February 2014.
WHAT DOES PUTIN HAVE IN MIND?
The stated truth is the protection of the Russian-speaking population of Donetsk and Luhansk, a portion of which had been under the control of Russian-backed separatists. But, based on the way Russian forces attacked several Ukrainian cosmopolises by air, sea, and pellets, it appears that Putin wants to undermine and neutralise Ukraine to the point where it can no longer constitute a security threat to Russia.
The US/NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan and the realisation that Europe/NATO would not go to war with Russia over Ukraine, which is still not a NATO member, may have increased Putin's resolve. The acquisition of Crimea by Russia in 2014 was a difficulty for Moscow, but it was not a major one.
More than 40% of Europe's gas and oil comes from Russia, which is good for Moscow as well. As a result, numerous European countries, including Germany, are wary of truly severe clearances.
INDIA UNDER PRESSURE IN THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT
New Delhi has not criticised Russian behaviour because of its truly unique ties with Moscow. It seeks a peaceful conclusion to the dispute, taking into account the legitimate security interests of all conflict parties.
What happened between Russia and Ukraine?
The essential significance of Crimea is that it plays a vital role in the birth of oil and gas, which is one of the country's primary sources of revenue. According to Ukraine's Energy Minister, Ukraine has lost 80 percent of its oil and gas reserves in the Black Sea, as well as a significant portion of the Sevastopol harborage, making Russia essential in terms of strategic and profitable areas (i).
Because of the country's past as a former Soviet republic, most people in the country's centre and west speak Ukrainian, while those in the south and along the Russian border speak Russian and have deeper ties to their old Soviet identity.
This arrangement fell apart in 2014, when the democratically elected administration of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych stated that it would not sign a negotiated association agreement with the European Union, instead opting for a Russia-focused Eurasian Economic Union.
Protesters also flooded the expressways of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, resulting in the Euromaidan Revolution, which eventually forced Yanukovych to depart the country.
People overwhelmingly agree to leave Ukraine and join Russia after a ballot held under duress. However, the UN General Assembly, Ukraine, and numerous other country leaders rejected the decision, citing numerous international accords in which Russia vowed to protect Ukraine's geographic integrity and sovereignty. Since annexing Crimea, Russia has claimed sovereignty of both sides of the Kerch Strait, the sole waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea, and has built a bridge connecting the two sides.
Crimea serves as a tragic and economically crucial link between Russia and Ukraine, which is one of the main justifications for its takeover.
