Background

The Government of the India is committed to developing its nuclear power capacity as part of its infrastructure development program. For this, the Center has set many ambitious targets in the coming years. 

India is outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty because of  its weapons program  and was largely excluded from trade in nuclear plants and materials for a duration of 34 years, which impacted its improvement of civil nuclear energy until 2009.

Moreover, since 2010, an incompatibility between India’s civil liability law and international conventions has limited the provision of foreign technology in the nuclear research. India was granted access to civilian nuclear technology and fuel from other countries after a waiver was granted by the 48-nation Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) on the 6 September 2008.
