Spring Allergy Tips

 


If you have allergies or asthma, spring can be a challenging time of the year. This season is recognized for big temperature and humidity changes and high tree pollen counts — all of which can contribute to allergies and asthma. Spring cleaning can even be hazardous for those with asthma because of  the irritating fumes from cleaning products.

 

Here are a some tips to aid ease your symptoms so that you can better enjoy the spring season.


Ignore being outdoors on windy days, mainly mid-morning to mid-afternoon, when pollen counts are often highest. If you must be out side , cover your mouth with a scarf or an allergen mask.


Keep car and house windows and doors closed, and ignore using electric fans inside the home, which can kick up pollen into the air.


After returning from outdoors, shower, wash your hair and vary your clothing.


When cleaning, utilize caution with household cleaning products. Confirm  the area to be cleaned is well ventilated. Never mix cleansers like  bleach, disinfectants and deodorizers with ammonia products, either in the bucket or on the surface to be cleaned.


It is great if non-allergic family members or others do the cleaning. Try to be out of the home during all cleaning, mainly during carpet cleaning.


Ignore being outside when fertilizers and pesticides are applied to the lawns, trees or shrubs in your neighborhood. If you a garden, arrange for someone else to remove the leaves and branches that may have collected in your yard or hedges. This kind of garbage usually has mold and other particles that can trigger your asthma.


Your health care provider may recommend extra medications, therapies or other environmental controls.
